Who We Are

World Scholarship Initiative is an Oregon not-for-profit corporation founded in 2013. We are a recognized 501(c)(3) charity.

Our organization leverages personal connections and commitment to create big impacts while being flexible, low-overhead, and cause-oriented.

Our Story

World Scholarship Initiative started in 2013 when Katie and Tom met the first class of WSI scholars in Kenya. They were three girls about to complete eighth grade, and despite being at the top of their class, they had no plans to attend high school. Tom and Katie had many conversations with Mrs. W., a teacher at their school, and the three of them decided to send the three girls to high school. Family and friends rallied to provide funding for the scholars. The girls thrived in high school and everyone watching them was happy and proud. WSI had begun.

Meet The Team

Tom Bode

President

Tom lived in Kenya in 2012 and 2013. He believe that everyone who wants an education should get it. He works as a lawyer in Portland, Oregon.

Mrs. W

High School Program Coordinator

Mrs. W. is a retired middle school vice-principal. She runs the High School program, and does everything from taking students shopping for supplies to communicating with parents. With four children and plenty of grandchildren of her own, she is a mother to everyone.

Katie Cobb

Vice President & Treasurer

Katie lived in Kenya in 2012 and 2013. She is motived by the thought that many children need just one opportunity to unlock success. She works as a physician in Portland, Oregon.

Tony Mecum

Secretary

Tony is a former middle school science teacher with Teach for America. He is motivated by the reality that education is most powerful tool to succeed in life. He works as a forester in Grants Pass.

Peris

Higher Ed Peer Mentor

Peris was a member of WSI's first cohort of sponsored students and graduated from the University of Nairobi in 2021. She is grateful for the support WSI provided her and wants to help more students achieve an education. She works as a chemist in Nairobi.
